The Stats: There are over 80 autoimmune diseases. Each one with slightly different characteristics. The entire study of autoimmune diseases is not nearly as advanced as other area of medicine.

Since autoimmune diseases are often misdiagnosed there are probably many more than the 23.5 million people in the USA alone with an autoimmune disease (by comparison the Nat’l. Institute Of Health claims that cancer affects 13 million people in the USA).

Autoimmune Disease (AI): Occurs when your immune system gets triggered and “thinks” that your body’s healthy tissues are being invaded. It is a condition of “attack on self.” Your immune system is attacking healthy cells when there are no invaders to them. The result of these attacks are diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s (thyroid) disease, skin diseases like psoriasis, or Lupus (which attacks skin, digestive system and your brain).

Conventional Treatments: There is prescription medication that people with AI can take that actually “turns-off” their immune system. This is, of course, dangerous because it exposes the patient to infection without immunity.

Steroids are often used, but they tend to mask the problem. Although steroids have been useful in reducing inflammation.

Botanical Treatments: CBD extracts from the cannabis plant may decrease chronic pain, inflammation, and spasms associated with some AI conditions. There have been few specific investigations on cannabinoid treatment for AI, due to federal prohibition on human clinical trials. However, extensive studies in test-tubes and in animals have reported the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD for specific AI conditions like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Role of CBD: CBD has been found to modulate the immune system instead of suppressing it. It also slows down T-cell production and suppresses immune system memory, meaning that CBD could cut down on the likelihood of future autoimmune attacks. CBD has also been found to increase the expression of genes that deal with oxidative stress, which may reduce cell damage from autoimmune attacks.

CBD therapy has the potential to assist those with autoimmune conditions by decreasing systemic inflammation, with little to no side effects.

Lowering Inflammation: Along with CBD therapy, those with autoimmune disease require a nutrient rich diet, exercise, sufficient sleep, herbs like turmeric, garlic, shitake mushrooms, and other herbs to lower inflammation.

Getting in balance:  CBD oil helps to get our internal organs and immune system functioning in balance.
